I'm a little bummed that
somein30 is no more. It joins a long, long list of icon challenge comms that existed on LJ and DW over the last 25 years.
Since I'm already running three challenge comms, I don't feel up to running another one - the creation of the challenge/inspiration posts is always the most time-consuming part.
But then I thought to myself, what if we just did some old challenges again? Creating a new challenge comm where existing challenges from old challenge comms are re-done, one each month, from a different comm each month.
What do you think of this idea?

No, how dare you, that's stealing other people's creative challenge posts!

Date: 2023-02-26 01:31 pm (UTC)One could also come from the other point of view and say it's great that people are still having fun with challenges that were created ten years ago, and it's a sign of honoring their quality? Of course each original challenge author would be credited.
Idk.
I'd ask, and I will absolutely do that for every comm where I can still find the admin. But my plan is not only to use currently existing ones where that would be possible, but also the *very very old ones* that were made on LJ ages ago and there's no way to ask anyone anymore.
Of course, going into details, we could have opt-ins and opt-outs, and then there's the question of whether we'd want to copy the challenge posts (just so they don't vanish on us) or just go with links to the original posts? I just didn't want to go that far into planning something like that if there's criticism of the idea in the first place.

Date: 2023-02-26 02:45 pm (UTC)Exactly!
Preserving the original posts would be neat. And maybe add newer inspiration?

Date: 2023-02-26 04:49 pm (UTC)But that would mean work. /o\ I don't have time to actually *run* a whole new comm.

Date: 2023-02-26 05:02 pm (UTC)Or invite people to share inspiration that would fit in the comments? Let people add some stuff and then post a reminder to say "Look, we have some newer inspo, too."

Date: 2023-02-26 04:42 pm (UTC)I only personally know of two comms that said a flat out 'no' to being revived. One was a very elaborate multifandom reccing site and the other a com for an event that only took place in one month a year.

Date: 2023-02-26 04:48 pm (UTC)Does that mean I can't "take" a challenge from them? That would pretty much nullify the idea, because most of all I want to go back to those very old ones.
Because I'm not looking to revive a single comm, but to collect challenges from all over the place, from a different comm each month.

Date: 2023-02-26 08:14 pm (UTC)Yes, that's the idea.
Create a new comm where we do challenges from all over, a different one from a different comm each month. I've myself been a member of 30 icon challenge comms on LJ (I just counted), and all of them are dead, of course. We could go for three years without taking a challenge from the same comm twice.
And of course each challenge will be linked and credited. We should probably copy the challenge posts, though, just so they don't vanish in case LJ disappears. But I don't think that'll make it worse? Idk.

Date: 2023-02-26 07:49 pm (UTC)I guess what I am saying - if you want to tell people where these old challenges are - then giving credit isn't an issue.

Date: 2023-02-26 08:02 pm (UTC)It didn't occur to me to post to the old challenge comms (I'm guessing
I thought of creating a new comm where all the challenges are taken from other comms. All different ones every month. And I was more thinking of really old ones, like

Date: 2023-02-27 02:58 am (UTC)Every one has different thought processes and pov. For me, if I'd made inspiration posts in such a community and then 10 years later I see some people using them to run a challenge, at best I'd feel deeply honored , seen and appreciated and at worst, I won't care. But in no way, I'd mind. But like said, everyone has different way of thinking.
Like others suggested , best thing would be to ask and seek the makers of those communities and if they're found and gladly agree, nothing like it. But if they couldn't be traced , I'd say if you properly credit the maker and the community, there's no way you're in the wrong at any point. Because think of it. There's technically no way to stop or prevent anyone to keep using the inspiration posts to be inspired to make icons any time anyway . Not unless they annihilate the community and delete the posts. Which they didn't.

Date: 2023-02-27 07:15 am (UTC)Me, too. But I wasn't sure whether I maybe was the only one who thought so. But the poll is crystal clear in its unanimousness. O_O

Oh, that is a good point. Thank you!
I feel like everyone's made similar points - I have to ask where possible, but where it's not possible, we can still use the posts, provided I credit properly (which of course I'll do!). So that's what I'm going to do.
Thank you so much for discussing this with me!

I checked my lj profile, and I'm still a member of 30 icon challenge comms there. :D We're spoiled for choice! :D
though I can imagine the challenging task of running the comm. :)
Ah, I'm hoping it won't be that much work, because I can just take/link existing inspiration posts? I very much hope it won't be too much work, lol. :D
I already went ahead and created the comm (
The first person I asked was
You ran/are running some, too, right? If you want to give me explicit permission for your comms, that would be awesome, too. I'm going to start a list of comms which we have permission for, so we have a basis from which to start, and then I'll go collect more permissions from older comms.

Date: 2023-03-03 08:39 am (UTC)I took over animated20in20 which I put on hiatus in 2021. Here it is: https://animated20in20.livejournal.com

Also if possible to track down naginis on LJ, the7days here: https://the7days.livejournal.com/ would be lovely to add to the collection!
Then another which doesn't get updated would be celeb_it (https://celeb-it.livejournal.com) & actress_ic which went on hiatus (https://actress-ic.livejournal.com/)
