Our next activity is based on provided textures. You have to use one of these given textures in each icon you make.

Ooooh, interesting idea! I like textures and don't use them nearly enough.....

ps - is it okay to change the colour of the texture? Not sure if I will, but I like to know before hand...

Yes, of course, you may do anything you like to the texture - resize, skew, rotate, recolor, invert...

It should still add something to the finished look of the icon, of course. Just putting something at 5% opacity to follow the rules is defeating the purpose. *g*

Neal!!! (fangirl me? yep) These are lovely, the clean sharp textures you've used suit him (and I like the way his short is picked up in the diamonds in the last one :)

I'm a big fan of Neal, and good to know that I am not the only one here :D You might be interested to join

daily_neal to see pretty pictures of him.

I almost always use blue background for neal, it goes so well with his beautiful eyes, and he often wears blue shirts, but when I found a picture of him in the green shirt, I thought it would look good with the diamonds texture. I'm glad you agree, and thank you for your comment :)

I love how you mirrored the texture in number 4, and the last one really fits his shirt very well.

I was not sure if I was supposed to explain why I used the textures, or how I decided to do this and that for the icons, considering that the community is called IconTalking. lol But if it's more about talking about the icons of the others, then yeah, of course I will keep doing that :)

I love that you put your characters on either sides of your icons so that we can clearly see a big part of the textures. I love the contrast in the black and white icon. The last textless icon is my favorite, the texture seems to fit so well with the colors of the characters.

I'm so bad with text, you are very good! I love that you matched the colors of the text with one from the texture for each icon.

Thank you! I tend to always offset the characters (partly because a little part of the brain is going "room for text??" I'm sure :) And once I do decide to use text, I fiddle a LOT with it....

I do like black and whute, especially where I can get a good contrast :)

Yay, cool! My faves are 5 and 6, and 8 is a very cool use of this texture! Of the text ones, I like the Smile one best, the text fits so well into the texture there.

I was chuffed with how putting 'smile' on that one lifted it quite a lot. Sometimes happens, sometimes... not so much.

It is. I made it specifically for an icon in a very cool challenge last year:

(challenge here) - and omg I was so creative back then. If I look at the icons I make now, they are so plain and boring in comparison. I wonder if/how I can get back to that level of creativity.

Thank you! <3 I tried to add different styles so everyone can find something that works for them, while keeping to a theme. I'm starting to get the hang of how to create challenges, and it's more fun than I thought.

I really like how you worked the text into the alts! (I struggle with text myself, so I admire icons that use it well.)

Of the textless icons, my favorite is number 7; I love how the lights lead the eye to his face, and the contrast between the colors in the background and the sepia foreground.

I'm surprised that it is your first time with textures, because they all look great! I love how the colors match in the second icon, the colors are vivid.

I would have used the black and white texture of your third icon in a boring framing way, what you did is much more creative! Very nice composition on this one, it is my favorite.

These are great! My favorites are 2, 4 and 5 (although Kamala is the only character I know out of these, so I guess she had an advantage). I love your use of color in all of them; they look amazing.

Very interesting composition in the first one. The pointy edges of the text goes well with the hair of the character, and the triangles of the bottom texture.

I love how you did the text on the third, and that the grungy texture that is also visible on the text as well.

Thank you! I didn't even consciously do that spiky thing, I just thought it needed more triangles. :D

I made so many tries with the third one, and the texture was never prominent enough for my liking, it just looked like a plain box. So I added more grunge instead. I'm happy you like how it turned out!

Great! Lucky for you, I had no time to do the roundup yesterday, so you are not too late at all! :D

My faves are 1,3, and 5. The red in combination with the green in 3 looks great, a) it makes her stand out more because the background is darker, and b) the complementary coloring really adds something, too.

I really like the last one, too, even though I can't actually tell what the subject is. *G* But the idea to put a spaceship into this texture is great.

It was the 25th when I posted—my time, anyway! But it was pretty late, I admit. (I spent most of the month without iconning at all, and then I realized that I didn't want to miss another challenge. And then I spent half of today figuring out how to do gif icons in GIMP, because your old one above that you posted made me realize that I didn't have any idea how to do it...)

Anyway, thank you! I had a hard time deciding about #3; I ended up going with the red background for the contrast, so I'm glad that that's one of the things that worked for you.

The last one is a Romulan starship, commanded by the woman in icons 5-6; the design on it is canonically meant to be a stylized bird of prey, although the image is small enough that you can't really tell in the icon!

I already had the texture you used in your second icon, and never did anything with it but wanting to. I love what you did, it is framing the character in a cool way.

My second favorite icon is #6, the lighting looks create a great dramatic effect to go with the image of someone holding a arm.
