Activity #72 - AI Our Way

Everyone's talking about AI-generated images, so I've been playing a bit with those tools and found they're quite fun. Of course we're not going to just create finished icons, but how about textures and backgrounds?

The challenge this round is to use an AI to generate a texture, and then work with that texture and make an icon from it - or several, combine them however you like. The theme is completely free and up to you. Let your imagination run wild!

Feel free to share the texture as well as your finished icons, and the prompt text you gave the AI to create the texture, too, if you like. Lets see what we and our AIs can come up with! Play with them a bit, figure out what they do well and what they can't do at all, no matter how specific your prompts are.

Here are three AIs that are completely free to use without registration. They all have a limit - about ten requests per day, but you can get a few fun results out of them even with that.

If you prefer to use other AI generators, you can of course do that, too. I just linked the ones I found that were free to use.




Here are a few example textures I created using these prompts:

Deepai somehow didn't want to let go of the jungle theme. When I asked it to create a futuristic texture after the jungle one, these were its results. I even told it not to generate any more jungle, and it still gave me more! In the end, I told it to make it an urban texture, and it was still half jungle. :D

* Create at least one texture using an AI image generator, then use this texture to make icons
* Every icon you make has to include an AI generated texture (but of course you can modify/blend it however you want)

I used Craiyon from your links above. It was awful at animals of all kinds, and the songbirds I tried for were a nightmare. But it did okay with wallpaper and cloth patterns, and the "halo of angry flames" worked out pretty well.

Oh, yes, specific forms are pretty much impossible. They do surprisingly well at human busts/portraits - probably well enough trained - but everything else human or animal is terrible.

I only tried to make it draw Snoopy once, and you're right, "nightmare" describes the result quite well.

Those language models are rightly criticized for being trained on overwhelmingly "western" material - which of course is the content you overwhelmingly find on the Internet right now.

So I specifically tried to get non-white people, which worked out surprisingly well. Of course, if you don't specify anything, the results will always be white - no surprise there. :/ But at least the results I got looked good! Here are some examples:



"black woman in impressionist style", "black red goddess", "Zhu Yilong in a fedora" - all by deepai.

Not that this looks like Zhu Yilong, I find it looks like Xiao Zhan!, nor is he wearing a fedora, but at least it understood I was asking for a Chinese man.

I'm also shocked how much like a perfect mix of Gauguin and Monet that first one looks.


What didn't work out as well (at all!) was anything else than portraits. Whose legs? No legs! :D

WOW!What a theme!Love it!I think I signed up on deepai a few months back and you could upload images to blend and create unique pieces but that option doesn't seem to be there now.
Anyway, I'm already making a few images to use!:D

What's the first one - tropical fruit pattern? :D I love the angry flames, those are indeed extremely cool.

The icons turned out very beautiful! I especially like the flamey one, but they're all great, and I love the coloring in #4 and #5.

I think the fruit texture prompt was something like "cloth with a pattern of peaches and citrus fruit on a navy blue background." I think it interpreted that as a request for the color and not the fruit, considering what it came up with.

I was trying to get deepai to *not* generate jungle - which took a while, it seems to be its default setting :D - and when I prompted it to create "temples and fish floating in the air", this is what I got:

These are cool! I think my favorite is #3 -- I like the sense of movement and the coloring. (Though I would not have guessed "wood grain" for the texture!)

I used deepai.org to make a range of textures, and it was interesting to create textures this way, I am not sure if all the textures I created can be used in icons. Keywords I used were abstract, light, nature, flowers, and victorian patterns.

Oh, it's interesting that you used the textures and then modified them, instead of using them as backgrounds. I especially like #5 and #9.

Yeah, I made a ton of images lately, partly inspired by this challenge, and now I'm trying to figure out how to use the less abstract ones in icons. It's interesting, and different for sure! :D

p.s.: I'm going to grab the second texture, I love the paint streaks!
