Activity #24 Song Set

Maybe it's the advent of Spring that's making my muse run into weird directions and coming up with increasingly hard challenges... but we'll try something that used to be a staple in LJ iconmaking and that I haven't seen in over ten years:

Song sets!

A song set consists of icons with the lyrics of one song. Since it's a really old (i.e. extinct) thing, the only example icons I have are my own:


"I don't want to worry whether we're going to stay together until we die"
(Cake, "Love You Madly" lyrics)

In my set, I tried to make every single icon contain meaningful text, but that's definitely not a requirement.
I've never seen a set so large that it contained a whole song - but I won't stop you!
Apart from the text, the icons don't have to look the same or fit together in any other way.

Thanks to yourlibrarian, who made me look into songsets some more, I found another example set:

"I want a girl with a voice that is dark like tinted glass, I want a girl with a short skirt and a long jacket"

* Really the only rule is that the lyrics should be continuous within the song from one icon to the next.

* Every icon should contain at least one word.
* If you can't make a part of the lyrics work:
** not all words have to be readable!
** NEW: you can leave out short connecting words (like "and", "that",...)
* You can choose any song, or more than one song if you make more than one set.
* If you want to leave out parts of the lyrics, just make separate sets.

* This time there is a minimum of 2 icons: the smallest set is a set of two.
* You can make as many icons (and as many sets) as you like.
* Please link the song lyrics, and/or put the parts you used of them in your comment with your icons

* Please submit your icons (and URLs!) to this post, all in one comment (if possible).
* Everyone can participate, you don't have to be a member of this community.
* I will collect all the icons from the comments and make a result post
* Everyone can leave comments on the inspiration and activity result posts
* There is no voting

If I, hypothetically, wanted to make an icon set for a song not in English (and for a canon neither in English nor the song's language), must I make the icons in the song's original language, or am I allowed to translate into English?

(I have eleventy billion ideas, please send help.)

Honestly, I'm open to everything here. I considered making icons with the original Chinese on it, or using Orange Biscuit's translation, or ... both?

You are definitely allowed to translate the song to English!

Connection between song and canon(s) is not required - so you can mix and match those as you please, too.

I might do two versions, with the original and the translation. (No connection required, I know, and this one doesn't have such a thing - "You are my rising sun / and my only homeland" is merely too apt to pass over...)

A fun version of this would be to select one song (something super popular that most people would likely be familiar with?) and see what results people come up with.
Maybe screen the results and have a "reveal" (or not, whichever).

Yes! I am honestly thinking of creating a comm just for songsets.

The low-maintenance variety would be like iconbattles or 10variations, where everyone can just claim a song and then post the results whenever they like.

The high-maintenance variety would be like you suggest: choose one song for everyone to use. we could then also make result posts with voting, and the winner chooses the next song. (Or to avoid empty times, the one after that). Or if we do it without voting, ask everyone and do a round robin of suggestions from all participants.

My only problem is that i don't have time to run another high-maintenance comm.

Or... the challenge could go back and forth.

But yeah, another comm would be something to keep up with. I'm tempted to volunteer to help, but am running vid_bingo and have another comm idea percolating.... so.... *hands*
Maybe just rotating the theme in here periodically would work.
