1. Do you ever give up on an icon? (And if so, what do you do? Delete the attempt? Save it somewhere to start over again at a later point?)
Depends on the problem I have with it. If I can't get the cap to look decent, I delete it. If it's a creative issue, I leave for later.

3. When did you start making icons?
2004, apparently.

That's a good point. I didn't realize I was doing this until I thought about it. Sometimes I can't decide what to do with an icon so I usually end up making alternative versions and then decide which one I like best by looking at them side by side, but if I can't get the cap to become a decent icon base, I just give up on it and try another one.
