LET'S GET TO ICONING!!
What are your personal picks for the top 5-10 icons that you've made in the last year? (I'm taking that to mean "last 12 months")
Show us five icons that you think best represent your iconing style
Basically anything with a close-crop and as many hands in frame as possible ;)
What has inspired you this year? (techniques, subjects, challenges, other makers, etc.) Provide examples if you want.
I haven't really been in touch with the icon community much since around October, due to my workplace having very poor connection + having issues with my feet, causing me to lie on the bed whenever possible instead of sitting on the computer.
What's your favorite show and/or movie to icon and why? Recently started on Bates Motel and it's really agreeing with me. I'm very multi-fannish so I'm all over the place, but some sources give me such headaches!
Who's your favorite character to icon and why? All over the place. Badass ladies are my #1 go to though.
Closecrop or far-crop? Why? I'm completely smitten with close-cropping. I love getting in close and dealing with semi-obscured subjects.
Vibrant or muted? Why? BOTH. It very much depends on the mood I'm in atm, or the mood I'm trying to communicate.
Text or minimalistic? Why? ahaha I am the most minimalist. Whenever I try to put text on my stuff, 98% of the time it's like pooping on it.
What's your iconmaking goal this year? Just recently made my very first post of the year, so hoping that won't be an ongoing trend. There's also some shows in my life that definitely need more icons.
Let's Ask Some Questions!!
List three questions that you would like to be answered by other icon makers:

What music are you listening to recently while iconning?
How long have you been making icons?

I really like A Love of Thunder - it works pretty great at 8pt or 10pt. I also like God Bless America (awful font name, btw), but it's not a good one for icons since it gets harder to read the smaller you make it. (I was going to add Helsinki to this, but then I saw that it looks slightly different these days than my old version. I'm not very font of the "imrpovement".)
What music are you listening to recently while iconning?
I usually watch documentaries on the side and listen to David Attenborough or Other British Guys talk about animals and nature. Very soothing. *g*
How long have you been making icons?
For over ten years. I think maybe since 2005? Somewhere around then.

What's your favorite fonts?
As I am scared of putting text on anything, I don't use fonts a lot. But when I do need to use one, 9 times out of 10 I will go for a sans-serif.
What music are you listening to recently while iconning?
I've been listening to The Dreadnoughts a lot after finding them on Spotify while looking for Flogging Molly.
How long have you been making icons?
I had to go look at my journal to figure that out, but apparently since 2007! They were even animated ones. ;)

What music are you listening to recently while iconning?
I listen to Hindi songs mostly XD
How long have you been making icons
I started in 2008. I was active from 2008-2010 and then went off the grid and came back to it in 2014/2015. I went off the grid again for a little while in 2016. :D

What has inspired you over the last 12 months? (techniques, subjects, challenges, other makers, etc.) Provide examples if you want.
see above. I really like fake backgrounds and negative space. :D
What's your favorite show and/or movie to icon and why?
Who's your favorite character to icon and why? Parker from Leverage. Because I love her. ♥ (But also because she gets to wear it all - slinky dress, plaid and jeans, weird duck singer costume...so many possibilities! - and she makes amazing faces sometimes.)
Closecrop or far-crop? Why? I think it depends on the screencap, but I generally favour the far-crop. Probably because you can't get much negative space into an icon if it's all face. :p
Vibrant or muted? Why? Somewhere in between? Muted can be cool and vibrant can be cool, but I tend to stick to the middle ground of bright and clear colours (but not over the top vibrant or dark and muted).
Text or minimalistic? Why? Text is for other people. :/
What's your current iconmaking goal? To experiment more with colourful textures. I've been trying to use more textures and use more colourful textures.

Photoshop from beginning to end.
Do you get your stock images from a specific site or do you just use google images?
If I'm doing pasted backgrounds, it's usually taken from the same source I'm iconning, textures from texture packs, gradients, or I paint in whatever color I want. Think I can count on my fingers the amount fo times I've used stock, and then google is my pal.
Which part of the icon-making process takes you the longest?
Unless I'm cropping the item out, it's usually whenever I get stuck and can't get the coloring to work/icon won't pop.
Looking forward to tiny Groot when I come home!

I've only ever used Photoshop. I own an old version and wouldn't give that up for the world. As long as that works, I'm sticking with it.
Do you get your stock images from a specific site or do you just use google images?
I sometimes got a few from challenge posts, but usually I google. But then, I don't often use stock as background. I'm more of a paint-textures person. :)
Which part of the icon-making process takes you the longest?
Oh, good question. Masking the subject takes a bit of time, but I'm usually still motivated at that point and don't notice if it takes long. Text always takes ages, too. I still feel that the middle part (coloring and layering and textures) takes the most time. Useless answer is useless. Oops.

Have you used different programs to make your icons or have you stuck with one throughout?
I used to work in GIMP; am now using CS5 (Photoshop). I did actually quite enjoy GIMP; the only thing that program can't really handle is text. Or at least I've never figured out how to make text look good in GIMP. It's the main reason I switched.
Do you get your stock images from a specific site or do you just use google images?
Google Images. I get my textures from Google Images, too, most of the time ... or, well. DeviantArt via Google Images.
Which part of the icon-making process takes you the longest?
Deciding on the color scheme/ main texture. I will go through four or five background textures, and various adjustments for each, before I find the one I like. It's difficult.

LET'S GET TO ICONING!!
What are your personal picks for the top 5-10 icons that you've made in the last 12 months?
I'd be really surprised if I made 5 icons in the last twelve months.. Let's see...
Show us five icons that you think best represent your iconing style
I really like colour and texture...
What has inspired you over the last 12 months? (techniques, subjects, challenges, other makers, etc.) Provide examples if you want. The increase in iconning activity over here on Dreamwidth, to be honest. I'd sort of dropped back to just making icons for my own use for the last few years.
What's your favorite show and/or movie to icon and why? At the moment, Person of Interest, because the screenshots show how well each frame is composed. It's a really pretty show with really pretty people.
Who's your favorite character to icon and why? There's so many. But I've noticed that Jum Caviezel often has his eyes closed or is looking down in screensots, and wow, that man has pretty eyelashes.
Closecrop or far-crop? Why? Close. Because ~drama.
Vibrant or muted? Why? Vibrant. Because you should use all the colours in the box.
Text or minimalistic? Why? For my own use, I usually leave mine textless, because it's hard to figure out what you want an icon to say, that you'll keep wanting it to say forever. But then sometimes the perfect phrase grabs you.
What's your current iconmaking goal? Get better at colouring, figure out curves. Get more imaginative with crops. MAKE MORE ICONS omg.
Let's Ask Some Questions!!
List three questions that you would like to be answered by other icon makers:
What even are curves? How do they work?
Can I make gifs with PS Elements? (I think I can with the latest version? But how?)

That's awesome to hear! I'm really happy to see how well this comm was received, and that there are quite a few iconmakers on DW now.
I've noticed that Jum Caviezel often has his eyes closed or is looking down in screensots, and wow, that man has pretty eyelashes.
So true!
it's hard to figure out what you want an icon to say, that you'll keep wanting it to say forever
That's the reason I don't go for tattoos, but I think my icons have quite a bit less life expectancy than that. ;D
That said, I find it exceedingly hard to pick the right words to go on an icon.
What even are curves? How do they work?
Is that a serious question? Because I have a pretty good tutorial for that:
http://mirrorskies.livejournal.com/27585.html
(I have a ton of tutorials, I guess I'll start posting here at this comm at some point.)
Can I make gifs with PS Elements? (I think I can with the latest version? But how?)
I don't have the slightest clue what Elements can or can't do. But I guess if it has an "Animation" view, then yes?

LET'S GET TO ICONING!!
What are your personal picks for the top 5-10 icons that you've made in the last year?
I started about a month ago, so...
Show us five icons that you think best represent your iconing style:
Again, I started pretty recently, so here's a few just picked at random:
What has inspired you this year? (techniques, subjects, challenges, other makers, etc.) Provide examples if you want. Well, I was inspired to start making icons when I got this account and realized I had fifteen icon slots to fill, so there's that!
What's your favorite show and/or movie to icon and why? I'm actually working mostly with books—covers and interior illustrations. I'll probably branch into comics before I start on shows and movies. Currently I'm mostly working with the old John R. Neill illustrations of the Oz books—I'm very fond of them, so at least I get to stare at some of my favorite art while I make my mistakes!
Who's your favorite character to icon and why? Too soon to say! So far the two characters I've made the most icons of are Marla Mason (the lady with the cards) and Princess Ozma. But that's mostly a matter of having a lot of nice art of them to play with!
Closecrop or far-crop? Why? So far most of my icons have been close-ups, but I think that's largely an artifact of the starting medium—since I've been working with a lot of book covers, well, crop too wide and you run into the text! I've gone for far-crops when possible, except when that loses too much detail. So... still figuring things out, I guess?
Vibrant or muted? Why? Again, I'm new and not really comfortable doing color manipulations just yet! I have a weakness for black-and-white lineart icons, though.
Text or minimalistic? Why? Minimalistic so far—I'm really a beginner! I'm not really confidant in my ability to make text look good. I don't know what I'll prefer when I've got more experience.
What's your iconmaking goal this year? Learn to use GIMP better, and to add text to icons in a way that doesn't look terrible. Pretty modest goals, I think!
Let's Ask Some Questions!!
List three questions that you would like to be answered by other icon makers:

Favorite Movie: Animated films, like Hunchback of Notre Dame, Pinocchio, Brother Bear, Last Unicorn, Swan Princess, Kiki's Delivery Service
Favorite Game: I'm adding this because games are my current obsession. I like Square's Mana series, Chrono Trigger/Cross, Final Fantasy (favorites are FFVI, FFX, and FFT), Kingdom Hearts. Soul Calibur, Puyo Puyo.
Favorite Character: This is hard so I'm going to name a character archetype I like and some characters who fit that: stuck-up, self-absorbed, queen-bee female characters who have antagonistic relationships with the main character but end up being reliable allies when the going gets tough. Examples: Vidia from the Disney Fairies series, Rulue from Puyo Puyo, Georgette from Oliver & Company, Cordelia from Buffy, etc.

I haven't made icons for like 5 years (!!), so I'm just going to pick from what I did ~5 years ago.
Show us five icons that you think best represent your iconing style
Light blobs, gradients, textures, playing around with text (esp. if the text is kind of silly)
What has inspired you over the last 12 months? (techniques, subjects, challenges, other makers, etc.) Provide examples if you want. Haven't had much inspiration for years orz But it's really nice that there's an icon-making community on Dreamwidth.
What's your favorite show and/or movie to icon and why? Sleeping Beauty is always a delight to icon because the art in that movie is so stunning. I'm so glad it's been remastered on Blu-ray!
Who's your favorite character to icon and why? Don't really have one...
Closecrop or far-crop? Why? Ahhh, I like both! I guess I do more far crops though. Close crops are hard without making the character look grainy, I think.
Vibrant or muted? Why? Vibrant because I like RAINBOWS
Text or minimalistic? Why? I like both. More of my icons are minimalistic, but I enjoy messing around with text -- I find it refreshingly challenging picking out fonts and laying out all the text
What's your current iconmaking goal? Make more video game icons, especially for my current obsession (Seiken Densetsu)

Date: 2017-05-21 05:52 am (UTC)1. Do you like icon contests?
It depends. Icon contests can be fun if the theme appeals to me and if they are challenging me to do new things. But if the same people win every single round, I tend to get bored with them.
2. If so, what format is your favorite (regular contests, LIMS, rumbles, battles, etc.)?
I don't know if I have a favourite. Probably not LIMS. I quite like the format of [Bad username or unknown identity: iconthat"]. Everybody posts their icons for a set theme and at the end there's a voting and a new round starts. Ages ago pretty much every fandom had their own weekly icontests where icons were submitted anonymously for voting. Not many of them are still around, but I did enjoy them.
3. Do you use Tumblr?
Yes. Sort of. I stop by once a week or so and load up my queue. Not because I don't want to be there every day, but because I don't have time to disappear down the tumblr sinkhole every day. It's so easy to "just quickly check my dash after I get home from work" and then suddenly it's eleven pm and I haven't done laundry or unloaded the dishwasher or done anything else at all.

LET'S GET TO ICONING!!
What are your personal picks for the top 5-10 icons that you've made in the last 12 months?
I have not made many icons in the past 12 months, because as I said, I've been away from LJ/DW and so haven't felt the need or inspiration. But here's a selection of five icons out of the fifteen that I've made recently that I think work quite well.
Show us five icons that you think best represent your iconing style
I don't know if I have an iconing style. These five at least feature elements and techniques I like to use: grid patterns, blurry and low sat, far crops, off-center subject, and color blocking.
What has inspired you over the last 12 months? (techniques, subjects, challenges, other makers, etc.) Provide examples if you want.
Hm. I've been talking to
What's your favorite show and/or movie to icon and why?
Doctor Who! I suppose because it's so versatile? They have everything (or, well, everything except non-white people, though that's hopefully changing). But when it comes to periodical or science fiction visuals, space or Earth, indoors or outdoors--it's all in there.
Who's your favorite character to icon and why?
I'm not sure. At the moment I quite enjoy iconing Peter Capaldi's various characters. He's got a great, expressive face. I used to icon David Tennant a lot, and John Simm, and Tim Roth ... I suppose I enjoy iconing British men with expressive faces. ;)
Closecrop or far-crop? Why?
Far crop! I don't know why, it doesn't make much sense, given the format. But it's rare that I look at a screencap and want to do a close crop. I suppose I enjoy the challenge of making a far crop look good in such a tiny format.
Vibrant or muted? Why?
I do actually quite like vibrant icons, but as for what I make myself, it's mostly quite muted. I think I'm a bit scared of colors--I have this issue when I draw, too; I never make the colors strong enough.
Text or minimalistic? Why?
Hmm. Both? I enjoy both visually. For making it myself, I suppose I prefer textless, because I find putting text into icons and making it look good really hard. Also, it's difficult to find a quote that fits.
What's your current iconmaking goal?
Maybe participate in some challenges? I'd like to hear what iconmakers in the community think of my icons; I've only ever posted on my journal, so I've rarely gotten concrit from actual icon makers (with the exception of

Date: 2017-05-21 05:40 am (UTC)And I think they use a lot of colours as well, so apart from the dark/gritty icons from some of the scenes, you also get icons with beautiful, vibrant colours.
Which Photoshop/ Gimp tool do you use most when you icon?
PaintshopPro (which I use) lets you record scripts, so that's what I use most often. I have several saved scripts of the basic steps of icon making (so brightness/contrast/basic colouring) and I pick one depending on my screencap. It cuts the time I spend making a possibly dark or overly orange-y screencap into a good icon base down to almost nothing.
How many textures do you use per icon (on average)?
I guess about two. There are some icons where I don't use any textures at all, just colour layers. And sometimes I end up with ten textures, partly erased and modified because they just need to be on that one spot in the corner but then there are four more for the rest of the icon. But that's the exception rather than the rule. So generally about two.
(I just checked the last five icons I made and the average was indeed two textures per icon.)
What's your favorite adjustment layer?
I don't know about favourite, but the ones I most often use are Curves and Levels to adjust brightness and to lighten up dark bases.

LET'S GET TO ICONING!!
What are your personal picks for the top 5-10 icons that you've made in the last 12 months? I have been very slack this year, which is one reason I want to be here :)
Show us five icons that you think best represent your iconing style That's hard, but here are five I made for me that I think are, well, me :)
What has inspired you over the last 12 months? (techniques, subjects, challenges, other makers, etc.) Provide examples if you want. Usually just I simply go with an odd idea I get (some of the topics this year have been common to me - reading, writing, happy fannish ones... I do a lot of nonfannish ones just as the mood strikes me). I also do an art comm each August, and for my art do... icons.
What's your favorite show and/or movie to icon and why? Pretty much all of the above, plus I have a fondness for silent film caps because of the emoting :)
Who's your favorite character to icon and why? Different for each series, but it's usually the preety one who Suffers Beautifully (and has the best lines :)
Closecrop or far-crop? Why? Close, I like faces :) but far enough so I can get text in if I want.
Vibrant or muted? Why? Depends on the icon, I do both on occasion... I do have a fondness for blue and brown shades.
Text or minimalistic? Why? I like text - I like words and language and splashing them around and use a lot of it, though not always (I've done whole series, just on my favourite words, and reading and florally ones without text :) I do a lot of comic icons and quite a few quotes and they're wordy.
What's your current iconmaking goal? Just to do more, I find it relaxing and soothing/
Let's Ask Some Questions!!

List three questions that you would like to be answered by other icon makers:
How you blending pictures? (I'm not good at it - I use GIMP, so that may make it harder)
Where you get ideas (esoecially for text)?
Where do you get textures?
Any last words? I do love our little pics, just seeing them make me happy, and collect other folks' that appeal to me.

Honestly, I avoid it. If I can't avoid it, it involves a lot of cursing and careful application of the eraser brush. Sometimes I put in a cleverly placed texture to hide a part that wouldn't cooperate...
Where you get ideas (esoecially for text)?
I'm not a big fan of text, but if I have to add text for whatever reason, I usually pick a character's catchphrase or a quote of theirs. If I'm completely out of ideas, I pick random things like song lyrics of whatever song I listened to recently or whatever.
Where do you get textures?
deviantart.com - you can search for textures specifically. One of my favourite texture-makers is lookslikerain (here are their icon-sized textures).

I love doing minimalistic icons :)
What has inspired you over the last 12 months? (techniques, subjects, challenges, other makers, etc.) Provide examples if you want.
Getting into Shadowhunters had inspired me back into iconing.
Communities:
I used to love doing icons for challenges but that interest has gone down marginally. I like to leisurely make icons now :P
What's your favorite show and/or movie to icon and why? Supernatural and Shadowhunters mostly. They are my fav shows and I want to share what I love through icons.
Who's your favorite character to icon and why? Sam in SPN and Alec in Shadowhunters. As explained above. I like to capture why I love those characters.
Closecrop or far-crop? Why? I love both and it depends on the cap. If the cap is in better quality I prefer to do close crops.
Vibrant or muted? Why? I love both. It's also depends on the cap and the mood of the scene.
Text or minimalistic? Why? minimalistic. I'm horrible at adding text/ selecting fonts. Text has always been my last resort.

Favorite Show: It used to be the Librarians, for which I made about 2000 icons over the last two years, but I turned my back on that this year, so... I don't have a really obsessive fandom right now. I currently watch (and icon) Lucifer, Elementary, iZombie, You Me Her, Sense8, The Good Place, The Expanse, and Timeless.
Favorite Movie: Brazil (but the older I get, the harder the dystopia is to stomach), some chick flicks like Dirty Dancing and Pretty Woman, Shelter.
Favorite Character: Dean Winchester, Castiel, Eve Baird, Flynn Carsen, Dana Scully, Tyrion Lannister.
Favorite Pairing: Aeryn and John (Farscape), Eve and Flynn (The Librarians) are my all-time favorites, but I ship a lot, so... one pairing for every show. :D
Favorite Food: anything with vanilla and/or cream.
LET'S GET TO ICONING!!
What are your personal picks for the top 5-10 icons that you've made in the last 12 months?
Show us five icons that you think best represent your iconing style
Lots of shippy icons. Vibrant colors. Selective coloring. Grunge and paint textures. Not too complex compositions with funny text.
What has inspired you over the last 12 months? (techniques, subjects, challenges, other makers, etc.) Provide examples if you want.
The iconmaker community on LJ. So many nice people, so many good makers. It inspired me to make tons of icons, and to create this community here. I love to be inspired by icon challenges, and my (still active) favorites are
What's your favorite show and/or movie to icon and why?
I like to icon everything I watch. Funnily, every show has its own special thing I like, and the resulting icons all look different depending on that source material, too.
Who's your favorite character to icon and why?
Oooh, difficult. Last year, I could have immediately told you the answer: Flynn Carsen. Now... I don't know.
Closecrop or far-crop? Why?
Mid to far. I am no good at close crop, and I like to have space to add text and/or textures. I'm not a particular fan of extreme far crop, either, although I like to do it now and then.
Vibrant or muted? Why?
Vibrant! Give me all the colors and Vibrance and Saturation adjustments!
Text or minimalistic? Why?
Text. I love text on icons. I like it when they speak to me. I try to make them express a emotions usable in commenting. That is easier with text.
What's your current iconmaking goal?
I find I'm in a rut these days, doing the same style (and steps to get there) every time. I want to shake it up and branch out more, while at the same time keeping my main goals (grunge and paint) in sight.

What has inspired you over the last 12 months? (techniques, subjects, challenges, other makers, etc.) Provide examples if you want.
Negative Space, close crop and vibrancy, and trying to do text although that's hard.
What's your favorite show and/or movie to icon and why?
Reign - pretty dresses and background
Who's your favorite character to icon and why?
Queen Mary, because she's pretty and I love her clothing but I do icon other people.
Closecrop or far-crop? Why? Depends on the screencap - close crop can be interesting results and far crops are fun when you can see the whole subject in view.
Vibrant or muted? Why? I tend to love muted coloring, I am always scared with vibrant coloring that I might go overboard, but I am trying to get into vibrant coloring as well.
Text or minimalistic? Why? Minimalistic cause simplicity is to key and I love doing that, also text is hard.
What's your current iconmaking goal? Text, blocking, complex cropping or just creating complex icons.
Let's Ask Some Questions!!

How do you create complex icons?
How do you do an effective job for blocking?

What are your personal picks for the top 5-10 icons that you've made in the last 12 months?
I haven't been active in 2 years, so I have nothing new right now. I'll come back to this question later.... ;)
Show us five icons that you think best represent your iconing style
None yet. Another one I"ll come back to.
What has inspired you over the last 12 months? (techniques, subjects, challenges, other makers, etc.) Provide examples if you want.
I've been really into the grainy look, with heavy blacks, selective color, vibrance and color layers. I also love putting text on icons. I've admired the styles of starkwars and scoobyatemysnax on LJ. For text, I was and still am inspired by never sleeps and letsey_x on LJ and Tumblr.
What's your favorite show and/or movie to icon and why?
My go-to shows are Supernatural and Buffy.
Who's your favorite character to icon and why?
Dean Winchester. So. Much. Pretty.
Closecrop or far-crop? Why?
Both. Love the challenge.
Vibrant or muted? Why?
Both. I like to keep my style flexible and I love trying out different things for each icon I make.
Text or minimalistic? Why?
Both. Text, because I love the challenge of fiddling with fonts, sizes, styles, positions. I like minimalist because I really struggle with technique, so I go minimalist because it's easy and fun.
What's your current iconmaking goal?
To have a decent icon post ready to go in a week or two. ;)
