Our First Activity - Got Fandom?

By popular request, there are going to be icon challenges in this community. Since I don't like the word "battle", and there is really nothing competitive about them, I'm going to call them "activities".

These activities will work like this:

* I make a post with all the information you need
* You have three weeks to make icons and post them in a comment to the information post (not screened)
* I collect all the icons (and whatever you have to say about them) from the comments and make a result post
* There is no voting
* Everyone can leave comments on the inspiration and activity summary posts

My current plan is to run one such activity per month, but we'll see how it goes and if you even like what I come up with.

But now, on to our first activity! What better way to get to know each other than by showing each other what fandoms we like:



For this activity, you should make five icons. You have until May 20th (end of day) to submit your icons as comments to this post.



1 - First Love

Icon your first fandom! This can be any fandom that you remember as a "first" - the first one you ever saw, or the first one you ever got fannish about, the first one you ever iconned, or the one that first connected you with other fans.

2 - Current Obsession

Icon the fandom that currently excites you most! It doesn't have to be a current fandom in that it has to be new or currently airing. It just has to be the fandom you want to icon most right now!

3 - Biggest Fandom

Icon the fandom that for you was the biggest fandom. We all know those popular fandoms everyone is iconning, there are thousands of fics, and even years later, activity is still high. If you have never been part of one of those huge fandoms, it can be the one you made the most icons of in your life, or the one for which you know the most fans.

4 - Tiny Fandom

Icon the fandom that you feel like nobody has seen but more people should have! Make an icon that makes us want to watch it! Show us what we missed.

5 - True Love

Icon the fandom that has stuck with you the longest. The one you will love forever, no matter what canon throws (or threw) at you. If you have no such fandom - because all fandoms inevitably dissappoint you ;) - you can choose to interpret this "love" theme to be about a favorite couple instead: icon a pairing you love.

Some notes:

* It is okay to enter fewer than five icons (but the final results post will look nicer if every slot is filled :)).

* You don't have to icon five different fandoms. If your first fandom happens to be a tiny fandom and your true love, no problem!
* Everyone can participate, you don't have to be a member of this community.

1. First Fandom - Northern Exposure

I debated long and hard which fandom to count as my first. I decided to choose the one where I first accessed the Internet and tried to interact with other fans. I lurked for ages and then wrote one usenet post, so I'm guessing that was the first time I actively participated in fandom. Yay. :D

2. Current Obsession - Timeless

It was cancelled! And then un-cancelled! Last week was such a ride. The show is awesome and amazing and funny and does so well portraying LGBT people and racism throughout history, and I love it to bits.

3. Biggest Fandom - Supernatural

It's supposed to be a cult show with a small cult following, but that's not what it feels like when you look at the amount of art and fic that is being created for this show. I have watched it on and off, but even when I'm not actively following canon, I still read Destiel big bangs.

4. Tiny Fandom - You Me Her

Lovely quirky show about three people who fall in love with each other. Very suburban, cute, and Portlandian. I love how easy it was to identify with the characters. A beautiful little show I definitely recommend.

5. True Love - Farscape

John and Aeryn are my permanent OTP. The show was funny and ridiculous and weird and wonderful. So far, nobody has been able to replace them, not even the Librarians' Flynn and Eve, who have prompted an unprecedented number of icons from me. I love them, too, but John and Aeryn are somehow impossible to dethrone.

Northern Exposure! That show was so cuuuute. I love your icon; it really fits the show. :D

And aww, Farscape. I still haven't made it past the pilot; it's been on my "to watch"-list forever. I already know that I'll love Aeryn, though. Claudia Black <3 Love your icon, too! I like how it looks like it's on fire. :)

NX was really cute indeed. Cracky and funny and occasionally cheese. And very diverse, which I didn't really appreciate enough back then.

And aww, Farscape. I still haven't made it past the pilot

It took me two tries to love it, too. The first season is very popcorn-movie fluffy nonsense. But once it finds its stride (basically with Scorpius turning up), woah, what a ride. It's still cracky and full of weirdly inappropriate pop culture references while at the same time putting your heart through the wringer.

Aeryn is amazing. But almost all characters ended up dear to me by the end, and that's something not a lot of shows manage.

Also, it's still the most bodily-fluids-obsessed show I have ever seen. (Don't tell me that's not making you want to watch it more? :D)

I feel very bad about having thousands of icons hosted on LJ, so I really have to move them. I am glad to have found abload, they're nice people (they don't even have ads, you can support them via patreon instead, which I think is cool).

I loved Northern Exposure, too. I heard the show came out on DVD, but without the original music. Hard to imagine. The score was a big part of the atmosphere.

I only make icons when I'm desperate but I wanted to tell you how wonderful it is to see this community on DW.

According to the reviews at Amazon.com, which sell region one DVDs, its version doesn't have the original music, either. So sad. I totally would have bought the entire set if it had. It apparently costs a lot of money to obtain the music rights after the fact.
