This is a pretty straightforward theme: show some kind of checkered or grid pattern in your icon. The pattern can be there in the source, e.g. someone wearing a plaid shirt or standing in front of a wire fence or playing a game of chess, or you can add it using textures.

Lovely! I always like how you connect the subject to the background with those colored shadows - it works especially well for me here in #2 and #4. My faves are 1 and 2. <3
