100fandoms challenge

Do you want to join me in a challenge? 100fandoms is actually a fic community, but I immediately thought of doing it for icons.

This is not an "official" icontalking activity, but a challenge I came up with in the course of Snowflake. I just thought I'd share here, because it sounds fun:

Make 100 icons in 100 different fandoms, following 100 one-word prompts.

If you want to make it extra-challenging, make those 100 icons within a year. (The fic challenge has no time limit, but I think icons are easier.) I took the fic prompts table from 100fandoms, but it's not identical! I made a few changes to make it better suitable for icons.

I'm definitely doing this, and I am counting all the icons I'm making in 2019 towards this challenge. (I already have ten. Woot!)

I find that I only make icons for two or three fandoms myself, but all the challenges with provided caps start adding up, and before I know it, I've suddenly iconned fandoms I didn't even know existed. :D

(I checked my icons for last year, and without trying, I got to 75 fandoms. Seeing that, 100 seems doable.)

Yes! Every icon has to be from a different fandom, and every icon has to fit one of the prompts.

It's kinda difficult. :) But the prompts are vague enough so that I think it's possible.

Yeah, it's pretty much exactly what I wanted in terms of icon challenges.

Can you do me a favour? I need to make a set of 5 icons for a challenge and they need to have a common theme. Can you come up with one for me? (It can be anything - a fandom, a colour, a certain technique...)

Also I was thinking of starting a discussion post - unless you have something else planned for today?

Nope, go ahead! (I had about 1000% more response to my 100fandoms post than I expected, I am happy for this month. :D)

A common theme... um.

I like color challenges, but five in the same color bore me like after three. :) Rainbows are fine, though. Another thing I like doing is using the same kind of texture, so I can come to the result from different angles and not have to use the same process over and over: like, e.g. floral, or stock, or scenery, or painted look. Do any of these strike your fancy? (If not, prompt me more! :D)

Hmm, I think I might use floral textures. I don't think I've used them much (or at all) and it might be interesting to use floral imaging in the icons. Thanks!

Edit: Is there a lag between posting an entry and it appearing in the moderation queue? Because it's been more than five minutes and I can't find the entry to approve it. *is confused*

Hmm.... apparently there are separate permissions for moderating and administrating, and you didn't have the Moderator checkbox checked.

I just checked all the boxes for you now, so your entries won't have to go through the moderation queue at all, and you can moderate other people's entries, too.

I usually give everyone I know, i.e. the makers who regularly participate here, permission to post unmoderated once they make a post. We're a nice bunch and I don't feel like hobbling conversation. (But I have had a few posts from random people asking random stuff, so I never removed the moderation, either.)

I'm very tempted to do it! And you're right, if you take all the challenges with provided caps into the equation, as well as communities like capshare (here on DW) or capspiration (on LJ), 100 different fandoms are absolutely doable.

By the way, I noticed a little mistake in the table (it's more like a typo than anything else XD) - #68 should be "blur", right?

Yes, I got to over 70 last year without trying. And if I try, I can probably fill the rest of the free spaces at the end of the year. (That's what I'm thinking, anyway. I guess I'll have to find out! :D)

Right after leaving my comment here, I started a list of possible fandoms (mostly TV, with the odd one from movies strewn in) - currently we're at 74! Of course, I'll have to seek good pics for the prompts, but I'm more than confident that I will get to 100!

Just out of curiosity: do we count series like the four CSI series (always forget the last series, cause I've only seen the first three) as one fandom, or three seperate? Or a better example - the Marvel Cinematic Universe. All movies in one fandom, or every movie (series) in a seperate one?

Hee, I should have anticipated this, since it's the most frequently asked question at 100fandoms. I'm just going to stick to the same answer they gave: you decide. If you think they should be different fandoms, then do that. If you feel they are too much of a conglomerate to be able to separate them into distinct fandoms, then count them as one. I'm rather late to the party, but I'm going to try to do this as well! It looks like a fun challenge, and will push me to branch out from my favorite shows/actors, which is all to the good!

I have about a third of my table filled now, and I am pretty sure I can fill the rest until the end of the year. (I'll probably have to scramble in the last two weeks, but that's okay. :D)

For myself, I intended the challenge to include "all the icons I made this year", but you're free to set your own timelines (or none, like the fic challenge, which is completely unlimited).
