I remember trying to put together a rec post a while ago and not finding anything "official" either.
Here's the only comm I found that is not yet deleted and has "songsets" as an interest:

They were created in 2006, but I'm pretty sure they were a latecomer and not the beginning.
Their affiliates also look icon-challenge related, maybe you can step through those and find more info?
I remember trying to make a songset in 2004, so I must have seen them around back then.
