Favorite Show: the west wing, friends, gilmore girls, in the flesh, miss fisher's murder mysteries, b99, the good place, schitt's creek, grace and frankie, izombie. honestly all the shows, all the time. i love tv.
Favorite Movie: um, inception? clueless? ten things i hate about you? honestly, this is so hard. i kind of hate movies? lol. i just don't have the attention span for them!
Favorite Character: fleur delacour and harry potter, though they aren't really prime for iconning imo. derek hale, chidi anagonye, grace hanson. huh, it seems i don't icon my faves that much. i should really fix that.
Favorite Pairing: i'm so indecisive, i can't pick! also, frustratingly, most of my fave ships don't have many good scenes for iconning (see: bill and fleur).
Favorite Food: mac and cheese!! (although i'm allergic to gluten+dairy and i'm vegan so it's a bit different lol)

i tend to make more simplistic, close crop, negative space icons but i'm trying to branch out and make more complex things!

What has inspired you over the last 12 months? (techniques, subjects, challenges, other makers, etc.) Provide examples if you want.
challenge comms have really inspired me to icon again! before 2018, i hadn't made icons in 3 years!
so a shoutout to fandom10in30, genre_icontest, hp_iconchallenge, iconthat, icons10in20, and ofc, icontalking!

and abyss_valkyrie,timetobegin, and tinny are always very inspiring.♡

What's your favorite show and/or movie to icon and why? currently, it seems to be the good place because they are one of the only shows to actually have decent lighting!
Who's your favorite character to icon and why? i don't think i have a favorite. maybe eleanor from the good place? i have a thing for blondes.
Close crop or far-crop? Why? close crop, all the way.
Vibrant or muted? Why? i love vibrant icons but i'm no good at making them so muted.
Text or minimalistic? Why? minimalistic! i'm horrible at text, i'm so envious of people who can make text icons!
What's your current iconmaking goal? to make more complex icons and more interesting colorings. i feel so basic. :(

I am notorious for not being able to have a single icon for the series "Supernatural" come out, and it frustrates me, perhaps because it's all so dark and my mind automatically wants to make things vibrant, and goodness I am not good enough that I can really make things vibrant from that series-- just one of those things I have to work at.

And yes, I've made icons for things I haven't seen however I always make a mental note to see them at a later date.. that was the case with Fire Emblem! Also people have requested stuff and I've been "Okay, time to investigate"

Wait, is that still a problem or are you talking only about seasons 1 & 2. I'm pretty sure they went lighter, more colorful and less contrasty in S3. Or did they go back to dark and I failed to notice because I haven't iconned the show since S4?

So I have tried screen capping various From supernatural and of course it's ridiculous Li hard for me to lights in them and make them look good So maybe it's just like a curse an epic curse on supernatural

The one I commented with. Saru is a ST Discovery character, and his species have developed to be wary/afraid all the time. The texture reminded me of synapses firing, so very fitting for him. Love what it represents, though execution could have been slightly better.

With movies? Lots. I kinda shrug and move on lol.

have you ever made icons for something you haven't seen? Only a few times for upcoming stuff I'm very hyped about, or for fandom_stocking and the request fest a while back on smallbatchicons.

that's so cool how the texture reminded you of synapses firing! it makes me love that icon even more knowing the backstory behind it! my icons almost never have that much thought put into them. it's more of a "which colors and textures can i slap on here?" deal.

I find that I struggle to icon shows/movies where the lighting is quite dark. Can’t remember any specific ones, but it has happened. I just find it difficult to lighten dark scenes where it looks good.

i have a hard time with dark scenes too. i always start off by duplicating my base image twice and setting the second layer to soft light and the third layer to screen and messing around with the opacity. it usually helps with the lighting a little bit?

They're simple-looking but I think the "atmospheric" vibe right and that doesn't happen very often so I'm pleased with them!

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D! It's one of my favourite shows but I can't work well with the caps. I'll keep trying though! And older shows like BBC Spooks are pretty hard to icon because of the low quality of the caps.

A few times for icontests with provided caps, or requests. Not that often though, it's hard for me to get inspired when I don't have a "feel" of the show/film.

those are very atmospheric! i immediately thought of fire and ice seeing them beside each other like that!

i completely understand about aos! i've only made one aos icon and i had to make it black and white because i just could not get the colors right.

older shows are so hard to icon! i'm always amazed when i see people make beautiful x files or btvs icons. how do they do it??

Haha, I ended up with a few b&w AoS icons for that reason as well. I think being completely uninspired also played a part, I should try again.

Ikr? With older show, I've found gradient maps really help. If the cap looks "flattened", it looks less pixelated and LQ. But it doesn't always work for me...

Yeah, I like it better when I can think of a quote or a colour scheme that would go well with the character. On the other hand, when I have no idea what the story is about, I feel free to do whatever with the cap and it can be pretty fun as well ;)

It's been my forever goal every year to make more complicated icons after seeing others' icons so I totally get ya! And when rounding up your top 5 or 10,you really end up seeing all the different styles you've done. <3
Okay,I'm guilty of iconing things I haven't seen,that's how I got into actually watching The Musketeers a few years back. :D And I have tried iconing things that are old,I think it's the cap quality,they are just so hard to icon!I've had that problem with 'Wild Child','Sabrina the teenage witch' and some things like that.

Looking at your sample icons you've definitely managed to break out of your usual style. *g* The b&w Stiles icon is my fave of the batch - it's a great way to represent what's happening.

It's my favourite because it's from one of my favourite shows (Riptide, an 80s detective show in the vein of A-Team, Simon & Simon, etc.). I haven't watched the show in a while and it's been ages since I made any Riptide icons, so it was just really nice to see these guys again.

I can't think of any, but I'm sure there must be some.

Yes, but mostly for gift exchanges and small fandom big bang art. I don't regularly or often make icons for things I haven't seen. (I have made icons for episodes I haven't seen yet though. Sometimes I lose interest in watching a show but keep making icons.)

Yeah, older shows are so hard to icon! I want to make more Three icons, but it's a little-known (thus DVD-less) show from '97.

I'm strict about what I icon. If I'm not a fan of it or expect I'd only have one post under that fandom tag, I don't make icons of it.

I can't say that it's up there with the best--there's some wonkiness with the black tones on her arm--but I like the pose and colors a lot.

Yes! I've done a bunch of icons of the Scarlet Witch comic series, because the covers were stunning, and I've meant to get around to reading the series but it hasn't happened yet. (In part because I know the pages weren't drawn by the same people who did those gorgeous covers!) I've also done icons by request for a series that I ended up skimming for the purpose, although that was something I meant to read anyway. And a couple from a Star Wars book (an English/Japanese dictionary aimed at kids, I think) just because the images I saw floating around were so cute.
